  1. new to buring vcds. sorry if this question has been asked before, I did a search, but did not find the answer.

    Here is what I did:

    1. converted avi file into mpeg for svcd w/ tmpgenc, has about 149,000K bytes, plays fine with WMP.

    2. burn it w/ nero 5.5.8.2, reported burning ok. the directory structure seems ok, however, the mpeg file shrunk to about 120,000K bytes when viewed in windows explorer, and the mpg file on CD can not be opened w/ WMP. The SVCD can not be played with WinDVD either.

    anything I did wrong? thanks.

  2. I'm pretty sure that whenever you make a VCD/SVCD, the actual MPEG is compressed a little bit, so it's normal for the file size to be smaller. The SVCD should play in WinDVD... there might be an error in the encoding or another problem with the SVCD. Try making an image of the SVCD, and playing the image back with DAEMON TOOLS. That program allows you to test the actual S/VCD image on the computer before burning the CD. If the image works, then you know that the SVCD works, if the image don't work, then you got an error somewhere.
Good Luck, hope some of this helped a little

  3. Thie size will definately vary. Sometimes you cannot read tracks after the first. This is either caused by
    1. writing using track-at-once I think
    2. a very large data file (non mpg) in the root of the VCD - you would have to put this there yourself.

The file cannoy be read by WMP but will play fine in a DVD player. You can read it using Nero buy using the menu Recorder, Save Track.

If this is not your problem that the previous postis correct and you have a media error.

  4. Appreciate your help.

Played with it some more. It seems the problem is with Nero on my PC. I tried to burn an mpeg1 into a VCD (also converted with temgenc), and it did not work either (VCD player & WinDVD).

Checked Nero web site, mentioned something about VIA chipset, which is on my motherboard. did not quite understand the description, have to go back and check the setting and read the web page again to figure out what need be changed.

this is a great forum. thanks everybody.
