  1. Simple question (and I think I probably know the answer) but can a VCD be burned to a DVD-R disc on a normal CD-Writer?

My DVD player will only support DVD-R so that seems my only way of burning my VCDs but I don't have a DVD writer.

a DVD write laser is about 20 or 30 nano-meters smaller than a CD write laser.

The beam focusers on a CD-R(W) are not able to focus a write beam that small.

That is the same reason a CD-ROM cannot read DVD. It cannot focus it's read laser.

  4. Have you tried different brands of CD-R/RW media?. My old Pioneer 606D supposedly wouldn't read CD-R media at all according to the manual but I got it work with some unbranded discs I got from a cheapie local store. I've also heard of others who say their players aren't supposed to read CD-R/RW but work with certain brands and not others.

Worth a try as blanks are so cheap these days.

  5. Try CD-RW media. I have a Sony player that I have not yet found a compatable brand of CD-R for, however it works with every kind of CD-RW I have tried. This is supposedly because the wavelength used for CD-RWs is closer to the one used for DVD.
