I haven't been on this board much for about 10months or more now. I wanted opinions in respect to how the current version of TEMPEnc compares to the old version 12a

12a seems to work fine for creation of SVCDs, the only problem I have with it is I have to demux the audio and remux it using BBMpeg so as audio remains in sync on my standalone player.

In any case I would really appreciate your thoughts.

Version 12a had a broken VBR fuction, thats why many older users always suggested version 12 for 2Pass VBR encodings. That just for the info
Version 12 and 12a, use to produce better picture quality (mpeg 2) than all versions up to 12H. Till then, the quality is better on newer versions but not with the default settings. Also, the latest versions, and expecially those after ver 2.5, have great differences between them. So, when someone suggest the best combo/settings for ver 2.52 for example, ain't the best combo/setting for ver 2.54.

As a power Tmpgenc user, I can say that TMPGenc 2.54(a) is the best till now. It is faster, the picture is sharper, the internal tools and filters are amazing and some features are unique: Expecially this cut fuction rocks!
There are also to problems: TMPGenc 12 and 12a, seems to work better with Mjpeg. I think that you can eliminate this problem with the newer versions, if you set all the filter parameters to multiplies of 8. For example, using the sharpen edge filter to values like 8-16-32-64. All other values I tested, add lots of digital noise.
Another issue of TMPGenc in generall, is that it is not the best program for full CCIR-601 encodings. It works much better with SVCD, CVD and VCD resolutions. So, it is not the best solution for DVD D1 video.
Newer versions also fix an well known bug of older tmpegs which has to do with the svcd multiplexing.

    Thanks for the GREAT info

I just downloaded it and tried it out with some really strange results. I noticed it doesn't seem to open some of my files.

For example I tried to open an MJPEG AVI file create with my Matrox G400 TV and it comes up with the error can not open, or unsupported. Now when I try V12a it opens all my AVIs fine??

    Any thoughts?
