I need to decide on whether to trade in my CD-RW for a DVD-RW before the DELL parts return policy time limit very soon.

How many minute of Very clear video can I get on a DVD, as opposed to a CD?

    thanks

  2. depends, i normally fit 2 movies on a dvd-r, (10 - 12 20min episodes like friends or 5 or so 40 min episodes like startrek) this is very good quality mpeg 2 as well using 2-pass on tmpg.
If the quality of the movie is very good like a dvd-rip then id use mpeg1 and get 3 or 4 movies on a disc
    Tis well worth it.

Too vague (very clear?). In my opinion, SVCD 480x480 2000 Mbps avg. is "very clear" in standard resolution television standards. If burned in SVCD format, 1 CD will hold 50 minutes (you can squeeze 60 but quality loss starts to become noticeable on standard TV), the DVD-RW should hold over 5 times that in the same quality. SVCD however is not standard for DVD, so look at the guides for how to put SVCD on DVD.

The quality of the stuff I'll copy ranges from really good to fair, and is family VHS video that I will be capturing from our VCR with Dazzle Digital Video Creator II.

How many minutes of very good reproduction of that would go on a CD....and on a DVD?

For what you describe, SVCD is more than adequate, and my previous post describes what to expect. DVD resolution would be overkill. But again, SVCD is NOT a standard for DVD so if you encoded to DVD standards and burn as a standard DVD I think you will be able to fit about 3.5 times in length of DVD format on DVD as SVCD format on CD.

  6. joeAgain,
The time limit of a CD is what is listed on the label(74,80,90,99min.)the framerate determines the size of your mpeg-2. A DVD disk can hold 2 hours (4.7GB) of high quality video(9000kbps).

Paul777 here says that if he records his VHS as just raw data on a CD, it will record and play 14 minutes of his home movies.

Does that mean that VCD to last 90 minutes is about a 6 to 1 compression?

  8. How many minutes of MPEG-1 Video (recorded from Old VHS tapes) can you fit on one DVD? Can I fit a whole 8 Hour tape on a DVD? Will the quality be the same? (I am not increasing the quality, I just want the exact image on my DVD instead). Also, for capturing is this card any good...

    Dazzle DM7000 DVC2

or should I get an ATI All In Wonder Radeon 7500 or 8500DV?

    Thanks!!
