Hi there. I'm not sure this is the best place to start this, (note: I am assuming it was not, which is why nobody responded to my earlier post, so I'm resubmitting it here) but I also have subtitle encoding problems, and when I searched on that topic this is what came up.
Mine is that, while AVStoDVD mostly completes its work, it aborts once it starts encoding the subtitles. These subtitles are are separate from the .mkv movie file, and were encoded separately by myself using Jubler supposedly as a UTF-8 compatible file, and were saved with an identical filename to the movie, but with an .srt ending. I will also enclose the log file. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

The subtitle does not necessarily have to have the same file name .
Try removing all the special characters from the assets and rebuild the project (eg. movie.mp4, movie.srt)
if it still fails upload the srt and i'll take a look -
Thanks for your response, Davexnet. I followed your suggestions, but getting a bit confused from all the temp and intermittent files used during this process I renamed the main file, 'LittleBigMan_3dTry' so I could track where I was. I'll include the srt file as you requested along with screen shots of the dozens of temp files most of which remain on my machine. If you see something that could be useful, I'll be happy to send it your way. I also have screen shots of the original AVStoDVD setup, and the final one reporting the failure, if you think either of these would be helpful.
Again, thanks for your help. -
Assuming the task is not running, you can delete all those temp files. I'm not sure but the program may automatically save them
if the project failed. I'll take a look at your SRT.
My suggestion was to simplify the video and srt names and retry the operation.
Was there any difference?
I created a project with the SRT you posted and it ran to completionLast edited by davexnet; 5th Dec 2025 at 01:57.

Thanks for your response, davexnet. I'm not sure what exactly you mean by "simplify the video and srt names". At the moment they have exactly the same name(s). There was no difference after they finished that I could notice; the program (AVItoDVD) blew up at about the half way mark. I do have a screen shot of what AtoD reported, when it blew up, and also of its initial state before it started running, I'll send them along, maybe that'll help? I am very glad someone was able to run it to completion, but I haven't yet. Thanks for your efforts.

Just simplify the file names, rename them in windows Explorer,
get rid of spaces and special characters.
Then rebuild your project in A2D -
I tried it following your suggestions (renamed the movie w/o any spaces or anything else besides ordinary ascii characters), even downloaded notepad++ so I could inspect the raw ascii characters, where everything seemed fine. Nonetheless, A2D exploded at the 39:12 point. This time I will enclose my log file (named, in this iteration, DVD_9.log) because I am at a complete loss otherwise. I truly hope you can make sense of it.

I do not know how davexnet did the test with only the .srt file.
I do not have the movie so I do not know how to do a test.
I'm guessing this is the problem(from the log):
SubtitleCreator Parameters: "C:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\Temp\DVD_9_LittleBig Man_1.srt" -p4 -i"C:\Program Files (x86)\AVStoDVD\SubtitleCreator\Examples\VTS_01_0.I FO"
SubtitleCreator finds this file: "C:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\Temp\DVD_9_LittleBig Man_1.srt"
(I do not know why there is a space between Big&Man it is not that way in the Reply box).
I believe you need to delete : "C:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\Temp\DVD_9_LittleBig Man_1.srt"
Since you changed the srt file name to: LittleBigMan_edited.srt
I believe SubtitleCreator should find this file:C:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\Temp\LittleBigMa n_edited.srt
davexnet has more experience with A2D so I will see what his opinion is on this.Last edited by cholla; 6th Dec 2025 at 12:46. Reason: I tried to correct incorrect spaces but could not.

Yeah looks like something got mixed up, possibly some old files left from a previous run causing issues.
Make sure you use a unique name at DVD label on the main screen.
Might be worth going into the folder that holds the temp files (preferences / paths), sort by date, and delete anything
related to A2D (close the program first)
Not advised to use folders for this program that have any association with "Onedrive"
I was able to use your SRT and it worked fine (I used a different, similar length video)
Another thing to try is opening the subtitlecreator manually (from the A2D folder) and see if the SRT will loadLast edited by davexnet; 6th Dec 2025 at 16:41.

I just saw cholla's earlier post. I'm not sure what's up, since I explicitly directed A2D to use the the edited subtitle file (so named because I did find a few odd characters scattered amongst the ascii, in the file while browsing with notepad++; a few 'musical notes' which didn't look like usual ascii, so I deleted them). But I really don't know what I'm doing, so I hesitated to do anything more. I was sure to use a "unique name at DVD label on the main screen." The Onedrive thing was Micro$oft's idea, not mine, but since I'm generally unsure of what I'm doing I usually tend to stick with the defaults. I am capable starting up and using another folder, should I? How does one open subtitle creator manually? Are there any instruction guides? Thanks for your efforts so far.

Yes, modify the preferences\paths so that it does not use any Onedrive folders and save as default
Use windows explorer to navigate to
c:\program files(x86)\AvstoDVD\subtitlecreator and open subtitlecreator.exe
Drag the srt into the lower half of the window. If it's successful you'll see the lines propogate.
At the top select profile\apply profile\A2D ntsc 16x9
File\save SUP as (give it a simple name, save it somewhere on your Desktop)
Open A2d and recreate the project. Instead of loading the SRT, load the SUP you just created
(If your SRT doesn't load in Subtitlecreator try this one)Last edited by davexnet; 6th Dec 2025 at 17:57. Reason: more info

OK, now I'm really confused. I followed your directions to a "T", double clicked on subtitlecreator.exe, and the program didn't do anything at all: it simply stared back at me, blankly. The enclosed screen shot shows where I was when the blank stare occurred. I'm really trying here.

It starts up for me in Windows 10 Pro.
Are you using Windows 11?
The program is old, written for XP SP3. Right click the program and use the compatibility troubleshooter -
Now I'm getting super frustrated. I followed your advice with the troubleshooter, but then IT blew up; not only that, but as soon as I let go of the mouse button from taking its screen shot, it vanished, replace by a message telling me to 'contact Microsoft support'. But I did get the screen shot (enclosed). The funny name is because it is squared, as in mstroubleshootetroubleshooter. I'm about to thrown this *%^#)! machine out the window. First, I'll just search for a version of subtitle creator from some third party.
-
Perhaps its a Windows 11 incompatibilty issue. I don't have Windows 11, so cannot test it myself
You should reply yes and allow Windows to do its diagnostics
To hasten your A2D project, I created the SUP for you, extract it from this zip file.Last edited by davexnet; 7th Dec 2025 at 14:10.

OK, progress I guess. See screenshot. I need to do some other things today, so I need to put this up for the moment. But tomorrow I'll be all over it. Thanks fo sticking with me.
-
P.S. I also did a search using AgentRansack for what I guess was the subtitle file that subtitle creator was actually using (as opposed to the one I wanted it to use, i.e. "_Untitled.sr") but Agentransack didn't find anything. My confusion is compounded.

I was able to DL a copy of Little Big Man.
It was not the blu ray rip but was a .mp4.
I just loaded the .mp4 & the .srt in A2D. I did not use subtitle creator seperately.
I used the Little.Big.Man.1970.1080p.BluRay.x264.srt posted by dalsquared in post#3.
I assume this is the subtitle file dalsquared used & had the problems with.
My result came out good & the subtitles are in good sync with the audio.
This is the log: -
My profound thanks to both of you, both davexnet and to cholla. I used davexnet's subtitles to encode the movie, and will try yours, cholla when I get a chance because I really do wish to be able to conquer this on my own one of these days; I was able to use davexnet's file to successfully encode the movie WITH the subtitles included, but I am surely confused on what in the world went wrong in A2D. He might have been right, it could have been some sort of incompatibility with Micor$oft11, which will require some investigation. I started this project in order to help a neighbor with hearing disabilities watch one his favorite old movies, and he has other movies I think he'd like to occasionally watch (and follow), so this project will carry on, and I will pour over your log file, cholla, trying to figure out what went wrong so I can fix it. But this will be when I get a chance. But in either case, thank you both so much for your help.
