Hello, and good day, everyone.
I hope that you all are well on this Wednesday. I'm here in the States and I am on a 24.04 Linux Ubuntu desktop trying to burn some upscaled 1080 to 4K video content to a blank Verbatim BD-R Single Layer and Dual Layer Disks. I have tried using ImgBurn 2.4.2.0 using Wine database, xfburn, k3b and Brasero on my computer and all have completed burning the m2ts upscaled video successfully, but the disks do not play on my Samsung or Sony blu-Ray players nor my Dad's LG 4K units. On the Samsung and Sony players the disk reads as invalid on the Sony one, and says it cannot be played on the Samsung. On my Dad's LG 4K players, it has said "Audio format is unsupported" when trying to access files on the disks.
I downloaded a Linux version of tsMuxeR (version 2.7.0), and using tsMuxeR, I'm able to mux the video to a blu ray folder (and iso, that did not seem to work on my players either). ImgBurn (through Wine database - version 2.4.2.0) then takes over and I try to burn those files to a blank Verbatim BD-R disk for playback. All muxes and burns from ImgBurn are met with successes each time. I have burned another couple of disks to SL BD-R and have gotten on the Samsung blu-ray player no video and a choppy audio performance (maybe it is too high a definition for my player and TV?). The Sony blu ray player downstairs just says that it is a BDMV readout and does not play there. I'm wondering if they might have a different result on my Dad's 4k blu ray LG players? Does anyone have any ideas on how best to solve this matter, please?
I also have a free trial run of DVFab 13 (through Wine) that I was thinking of getting a thumbdrive and putting the video to to allow for placement into the UHD Creator there. Some have said DVDFab is unreliable, any thoughts on this are welcome also, please?
Might you all have any thoughts about how best to proceed? Maybe take the set of attempts to my Dad and try again? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, please? Thanks again for your help and attention, all.

The playback issues you're encountering maybe come down to codec compatibility and the disc burning process.
If you have access to a trial of DVDFab, the UHD Creator module is designed specifically to take your source video and properly encode, and author it into a stable Ultra HD Blu-ray compatible disc structure. It handles all the necessary audio/video compliance and disc authoring in one streamlined process, often giving better results than manual muxing + burning.
Also, test slower burns and ensure audio codecs are compatible. -
If your Sony Blu Ray is not a 4k player, then it will not play 4K/UHD discs. Check the instructions for your father's LG player to see which audio codecs it requires. I know that LG can be a bit finicky with home-burned discs sometimes. I use a Panasonic UHD player that devours everything I feed it whith in "homemade" format. Hope you understand what I mean

if you're trying to make a 4k uhd disc that will player on retail players it pretty much mission impossible.
regardless of you're trying on just regular blu ray players like the samsung's or sony. or even 4k players.
don't think blu ray players, would even recognize the 4k files.
and burned 4k wasn't part of the 4k player spec. so getting that to work is very problematic. and basically no.
epic thread discussing that here.

hope i'm understanding your question correctly.Last edited by geek gift; 7th Aug 2025 at 04:09.

Thanks for your attention and replies, guys.
Your responses are greatly appreciated. Thanks too, Wenny, for your thoughts on DVDFab. I am in the free trial period and I have three disks left on the UHD Creator. I am running it on my Linux desktop using Wine database, and the converter has a really hard time trying to convert any files to UIHD format. I tried to put an 8 minute video into there and more than an hour later it had not even begun to encode it after I hit start.
I am wondering if I should fork out the money for a year's trial on it, especially considering it won't work in the free trial for what I need it to. Do you have DVDFab? Can you buirn UHD disks with it, please?
I was also looking at another encoding tool on Linux - Handbrake. I thought maybe using that and ImgBurn that I could maybe burn some UHD disks.
Finally, I have looked into moving the movie files into a flash or thumb drive. My Element Electronics TV sees the folders on it, but none of the movies and files I have inside there. I am wondering if my Dad's 4K TV would find them and be able to work with them?
Thank you again for your help and attention, everyone. God bless you, take care and have a good day and weekend ahead as well. -

try putting the files directly on the usb drive. and not putting them in folder. that might help the tv to see it.
make sure you have the usb drive formatted to a file system it approves of. e.g fat 32/exfat or whatever works for your tv.
also make sure the videos use a codec your tv can read.
good luck. -
Thanks, Alwyn and geek gift!
Appreciate your time, attention and replies very much. I hope that you both are well to begin our weeks also.
Thanks for trying the encoding in Handbrake and placement of a file on your flash drive, Alwyn. I'm glad yours worked. Did you do anything special in Handbrake with settings or making any modifications anywhere before the encoding? And what format is your video file in, please? Thank you very much.
Thanks for all your suggestions as well, geek gift. I have an extra Samsung smart tv that I tried to plug my USB into, it found a couple of the files but not all (mpgs and mp4 showed up and were playable, but none of the m2tses). Thank you for your good luck wishes as well, might you have any thoughts about how best to try again, please? Thank you very much.
God bless you both. Thank you again for your time, attention and assistance. Take care and have a great day ahead as well. -
@Byrdman, happy to help.
And what format is your video file in
Re upscaling, you may find that your TV will upscale your 1920x1080 video as well as Handbrake does.
For Handbrake, open your file then set the output file container/extension to MP4: Tools>Preferences>Output Files: "Always to MP4".
Now, go through the tabs:
Summary:

Dimensions:

Filters:

Video:

I've set the RF at 18, which is a reasonable quality level, but if you see lower quality, you can increase it by decreasing the RF.
Audio:

Depending on your source files, you can experiment with surround audio.
Now you're all set to export: set the export file name down the bottom, and then, up the top, hit Encode.
You can also use that process to change your M2TS files. -
Thanks so much, Alwyn!
I truly appreciate your time, attention and assistance, my friend. I hope that you are doing well to begin our weeks as well.
Thank you very much for answering my questions and providing very helpful screen captures to illustrate your explanations as well. It was very helpful.
I believe I am working with a different version of Handbrake than you are, unfortunately. When I open source and bring in my video the dimensions tab looks totally different from yours - I just have a cropping section, a storage geometry section and a display geometry section. And I cannot access the display geometry section. Have you ever seen a setup like this before yourself, please?
And a person on another forum has told me that the x265 encoding is 4K UHD format, had you heard this yourself?
Have you ever worked with tsMuxeR as well? I am wondering if creating mp4 files and using that might work out to burn a BD-R disk with the video, as well as the usb flash drive possibly?
God bless you, Alwyn. I appreciate all your attention and help. I will keep you in prayer this evening. -
yep x265 puts you in the equivalent of the 4k uhd category. x264 puts you in the equivalent of the
blu ray category.
Byrdman9802, your going to have to check and see what video formats your tv supports. some samsung's don't support m2ts.
once you get that info. we will know if it's a tv issue or something happened with the ripping.
i've never used handbrake. and i'm a pure windows kid. the horror the horror.
so i have no software suggestions for you. but programs taking an mp4 or mkv, and being able to convert it. to the blu ray structure. so it can be burned to disc. is definitely a thing.Last edited by geek gift; 12th Aug 2025 at 18:43.
