I have betacam , VHS and HI8 tape I want to digitize it.

Hey guys, I know I am too late to discussed this in this thread. but since it is related to... i will tell u my problems while capturing my memories
I did the same thing what the owner of this thread had done.
i have betacam , VHS and HI8 tape I want to digitize it.
I have done maaaaaany things and i bought all kind of USB's capture devices . but the end I stopped.

I read many places that I have to capture RAW file to have all the data stored in the tape
but.......
the first issue is drop frames ...the monster

regarding Betacam tape....
Beta player , SDI out --------->FS1 ---------> componenet out -------> AJA LHI
XLR out ---------> FS1--------> XLR out -----------------> AJA LHI

it worked since it is logic
but I do not need these thing... I need to have one sdi (audio embeded ) out from FS1 to LHI AJA card
but it did not work ... i do not know why ??
and some time there is drop frames ..... while fs1 is TBC and frame sync

also VHS
VTR------> AJA LHI ( but the video not stable some time )

last this when I capture HI8 by firewirer1394 , I faced also drop frames ....OMG what should I do
if I digitize it bu USB capture devices all went smooth .... but when capture in in raw .. all issues come

please help for that guys since all of u have done this project before
by the way I also tried blackmagic intensity 4k before
but now I tried AJA

by the way system is PAL and some time NTSC (tape)

It's hard to figure out how your workflow is setup, Usually ingesting SDI is straight forward, not sure what went wrong in your workflow, maybe more info or some screenshots of the setup pages will help, I'm pretty sure it has to do with how you set up the FS1 and LHI.
I personally use BM UltraStudio SDI (USB3) and HuperDeck Shuttle 2 a SDI recorder and both worked with no problems.

You really shouldn't need a TBC with a betacam player that has SDI output (most of those have a built in TBC) and signal is already digital at that point. What model is yours?

For your VHS capture pathway, seems you left the FS1 out of that chain which would probably actually be helpful there.

Only other advice would be to try a different capture card like one of the standalone hyperdecks or something like the AJA KiPro and record SDI from those. For the VHS setup, the AJA FS1 can convert to SDI which you can then feed to the SDI recording device.
