I would like to cast my laptop screen to our LG HDTV. It is a relatively new smart TV. I guess the most obvious solution is a kind of dongle that has a receiver and can be plugged into the HDMI slot. But is there any solutions that does not need an extra device and don't need involvement of the internet? I have seen there are casting apps online, you can connect the 2 devices, but I found them very slow.

I checked the menu of our TV, but is seems to have no option to select Laptop bluetooth as an extra input device. Some guides on Youtube show this as possibility but I find no option like that. In the Apps menu of the Home screen, I can find an app somethink like TV Cast, but it requires a mobile phone with an installed app to connect. I don't seem to find any other app for connecting.

I wonder if it would be still possible to add a third party app to the TV that can create the connection, or something like that.

The TV should announce itself on the network as a 'cast' receiver - possibly you may need to change a TV setting. You need an application on your laptop which allows casting. I have used VLC successfully.

Okay I checked it once more. You can connect media devices or laptop to the TV. I found the menu point that describes it, it is just titled "connect mobile devices", but in the description it mentions you can connect computers, too. It is automatic. And it does work, but only from applications on the computer that support casting. It doesn't work in a way, however, that you click Displays in the Contol Panel, and you select the HDTV, because it is not there. It is recognized as a network device, it is in the Network list, marked as available, but it is not added to the Display list of Windows itself. It only appears as a Display inside certain applications (Chrome, Windows Media Player) that support casting. I want to use it to play games from MAME arcade emulator on the HDTV. But in MAME I see no casting option.

I am on Windows 7 though, maybe in later Windows versions it would be different, I am not sure.
