I went to turn on my system this morning and it's completely dead, so I suspect the power supply is done.

The current one was put in in 2013:
    https://www.newegg.com/rosewill-capstone-series-capstone-750m-750w-at-50-degrees-celsi...82E16817182264

I used to be up on all the computer hardware tech, but I haven't built a machine since 2013. Can anyone tell me if this PSU will be fine as a drop in replacement?:

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/corsair-rmx-series-rm850x-cybenetics-gold-fully-modular-a...?skuId=6587623

    Thank you for your help!

I am not familiar with your current power supply, but I have used Corasair power supplies for many years and they are great. My current computer uses a higher wattage PSU RM1000e and I am quite happy with it.

I can't tell you if this can be a drop in replacement and I doubt if anyone else can. You just have to check very carefully all the specifications for both power supplies and decide for yourself.

    Buy this: https://amzn.to/3PYzA11
Those exact Corsairs are simply amazing.
On that page, you can upgrade/downgrade from 550-1000 watts, as you desired. At the higher end, there's more heat. At the lower end, not as well made. The 750-850 is the sweet spot.

Do not use Newegg. It's not the Newegg we all knew in the 00s-10s. It's some awful Temu style Chinese crap now, 100% Chinese owned, major problems, used items sold as new, counterfeits, etc. RIP Newegg. Total shit-show starting in late 10s, especially during the pandemic. Typical 2020s SPAC stock, from $25 to $0.45 (lost 98% value to investors). Avoid, avoid, avoid.

  4. Thanks Lordsmurf for that Newegg update. I bought lots of stuff from them when they were a real store many years ago. Not so much when they went online only.

I got the same power supply I linked to at my local best buy as I needed to get it quickly to get up and running again. No sooner did I install the power supply, the system would not POST! Apparently when the power supply went, it messed up one of the sticks of RAM. So I took out two sticks and ordered two more of the same kind - I did buy it from Newegg as it's old DDR3 memory, old/new stock, so I presume it should be ok.
LordSmurf, since you know about this power supply, what's the deal with the fan control knob on the back of the power supply? Shouldn't fan speed be automated? What do you set yours to? I just raised mine enough so that I can't hear the noise. No reference manual came with my power supply.

  6. That's the on / off switch. Fan speed is controlled by the power suplpy internally.

Not LS here but the knob is for overriding the PSUs internal fan speed setting.

See the Corsair site for the manual: https://www.corsair.com/us/en/p/psu/cp-9020270-na/rmx-series-rm850x-fully-modular-powe...-cp-9020270-na

    MANUAL FAN OVERRIDE KNOB
Want to get more air through the PSU or to exhaust some heat from your case? You can override the Zero RPM Mode and low-noise profile of the RMx Series with our manual fan override knob, increasing fan speed and airflow.
So... does that mean I should just have it to set to off and it'll management on its own? I still didn't see an actual manual, just some conformity doc.

The manual / Quick Start is here: https://www.corsair.com/us/en/explorer/diy-builder/power-supply-units/corsair-rmx-series/

It looks like the knob allows you to set a minimum speed.
