Please help me getting started

I am trying to conver an avi to mpeg1. I tried avi2vcd, and the avg time is about 80 hours. The avi is file is around 1.12 gigs. Please tell me what would be the best settings and the fastest way of converting avi to mpeg.

What's your computer like? 80 hours is quite slow for a 1 gig capture unless you computer is really sloooooooow. You might try TMPGEnc. I can run a 50 gig .avi file through VDub AND TMPGEnc to an mpeg 2 in 10-20 hrs (depending on the filters used) with a 1 ghz PIII.

I am using a 500Mhz computer with 256M ram. Is there any software that would help me in speeding up this process?
