i am having some audio sync problems with my sampo. i have recently tried to play 2 different burned vcds on the player and what happens is this: the video and audio start out in sync, but become progressively worse. The part i dont get is that if i "rewind" the vcd for a second and then play it, the audio is back in sync again- until it begins to desync once more. the vcds play perfectly on my pc. also- these 2 vcds are both in PAL format. theoretically, this shouldnt matter to the player, but i think it might play a role in my problem. i tried re-encoding with tmpgenc, switching the video to ntsc. now it just looks like crap and has the same sync issue.
is this a hardware problem? mpg problem?
Thanks

It has been reported a few times that some player have problems with VCD feeds coming out of TMPGEnc. What you should try is de-muxing (splitting the audio and video) with TMPGEnc and muxing both feeds back together with BBMPEG.

It's a funny problem isn't it? I wonder what's going on here...
Anybody have any suggestions?
zemix, what version of TMPGEnc are you using and what are the exact settings you are using (are you using a default template?)

Is the audio out of synch when you play it on your computer?
People have complained about audio synch problems with
sampo players in the past-- usually playing back DVDs.
I've never personally had a playback problem that cleaning
the disc with a tissue couldn't solve, but I've read stories
of other prople going as far as swapping the drive of their player
because of bad audio synch. -
I can't believe that a faulty drive could actually be the cause for sync problems. I always was under the impression that it had to do with the onboard encoders.

the sync on my pc is perfect.
i use the ntsc vcd template in tmpgenc Beta 12b. i'll try this remux business with bbmpeg and report back. i sure hope this works, as i just 'got' about 3 more vcds which are all pal. i wonder if there is some way to get the dvd player to "re-search" automatically and instantaneously (probly not, but there's always hope).
thanks for the responses

I've read this in a couple of places. Here's one:
http://members.aol.com/dcnjneer/dvdstuff/upgrade.html
and here's another:
http://www.geocities.com/reversengineer_2000/sampo/problems.html
In both places they complain about random skipping,
audio dropouts, and audio synch problems, and claim
that replacing the dvd drive helped fix things up.
On the other hand, I've never had any problems,
and I have the model 660, which has 5.1 audio (where
620 does not) so it probably has a different encoder.

@incognito
Thanks for the info - checked up and yes. What I would like to know however, if this (skipping) is due to a faulty laser alignment. I have heard that one can have this fixed by a professional (something like fine tuning a TV). Wouldn't that be cheaper than installing a new drive?
P.S. Never had problems with my Encore450 (clone of Sampo 560) either - it seems invinsible!! -

I've read mentions of laser alignment on some of these
forums, but I don't understand too much about it.
On many DVD players, the dvd drive has a simple ide
interface, so you can buy an of-the-shelf computer
drive for $50 and pretty much pop it in yourself--
although, again, I've never done this myself.

remuxing with bbmpeg did not work entirely, though i think that turning on the "align headers" and "pad audio" settings helped some. i am currently trying recoding the file in PAL with tmpgenc to see if that will do any good. just curious: would using vcd standard 1.1 make any difference whatsoever? or whatabout re-ecoding to xvcd with a lower bitrate (if drive speed is a problem, this might help)? or even better: should i change the firmware back to 3.3c (currently flashed to 3.4b)? i am open to suggestion.
-
Actually everything you mentioned you could try.
There are even more versions of firmware for your sampo you could try out. -
SWEET MERCIFUL CRAP..... it WORKED!!!
i flashed to 3.5f, and the movies play perfectly now. HOORAY for those crazy europeans (it must be the euro-PAL connection at the root of the problem). i am glowing.
thanks for all the help.
