    I know about video codecs and audio codecs and also containers

    But I don't know anything about subtitles
    How many types of subtitles and which one gives best compression

    I have seen .srt and .ass subtitles

    Basically there are text based subtitles like srt and image based subtitles like sup used on dvd or blu-ray

    srt is the easiest to work with

    I don't think there is much difference in file size, both are text based.

    sup are image based subtitles, so srt is the lowest file size.
    And you can't easily edit sup, so if you want the easy way go with srt

  11. On the other hand, SRT is the least flexible, capable, and consistent. The base spec doesn't include formatting options. Though some players accept some HTML tags for things like color, position, size, font, etc. So how they look depends on the player.

    @jagabo
    Absolutely true, srt is simply flat text. If there is need for more functions there may be other formats but for the sake of simplicity srt is the easiest to work with

    It depends on what you want from your subtitles, where they come from, what players you use, etc.
