If you will be making VCD's, the quality will never be like VHS regardless of the card you use to capture. SVCD can come close to VHS, but I personally dont believe it is VHS either. I am a newbie to capturing, but I know what I see

I use the ATI to capture video from cable or any input for that matter. Then I output the video to my TV. With the capture settings that I use you can not tell the difference between live TV and what has been Recorded. The file size is 694 MegaBytes per 30 minutes of recording. This means that the files are small enough to fit on one CD even in the MPG1 format or you can get 70 minutes of high quality VCD if you convert it. However, converting it takes several hours atleast. Does anyone else use the ATI AIW as a Tivo to watch what they have recorded on TV? Just wondering what settings are the best. Here are mine.
352x240 and 2.64 Megs/sec -
To 352x2402.64:
Change your name to 352x2402.64VBR if you have MMC7.1. Like you I also regularly capture TV programs and burn to VCD with the same quality as the original TV picture. With the ATI MMC REG Tool I use the following: 352x240 MPEG-1, 1.96 VBR. This is with a 1 GHZ CPU and Radeon card. A 60 min XVCD comes out as small as 500 MB. -
as for AVI, in winME with a 900 Athlon and AIW 128 Pro i can capture 640x480 AVI in virtualdub with the CPU usage topping out at about 12%. the quality is very good compared to other things i've seen. when you go to 480x480 or 720x480 the CPU % jumps up since they don't seem to be native resolutions of the card, (well, 720x480 might be, just takes more power to do larger frames). but it's very stable and hardly ever drops a single frame in my machine.
the SVCD realtime captures are also pretty good. they have less blockiness than TMPG except in scenes with fog or something, when it gets real noticeable, but they do have a bit more JPG artifacting (the 'mosquito' effect around objects). but it looks excellent on a 27" TV via component off my pioneer 343 from about 11 feet back (where my couch is - i will always be a little blocky up close, that's part of MPEG's design). i usually go with about 2.34Mbps VBR MPEG-2, and get over 48 minutes on a 80min disc.
