I need to produce 30 DVD's for my son's class and am looking for reasonably priced DVD-R media. I've seen some on-line adds for 45 disks for about $98 bucks and other adds where the cost per disk is as high as $8-$10) and it got me wondering whether there are any quality/substantive differences between the various media out there (only looking at DVD-R).

At this time, Yes, there is a huge difference in quality. I've tried some of the $2.00 disks and have had little success, where-as with the Pioneer, and Memorex branded disks I've had almost 100% success.
Go with the middle ground. The memorex disks are approx $5-$7 each, but you'll have a much better success rate.
When I say success rate I don't mean burning, as any DVD should burn fine. What I mean is playing in a stand alone player.
