I'm looking for a simple hardware media player that can play virtually all formats at 1080p, whereas I simply stick in a USB drive and play. I want to pay between $40-$70 if possible ?

maybe wait a couple months for tronsmart pavo m9 price to go down http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tronsmart-Pavo-M9-4K-TV-BOX-Mstar-MSO9180D1R-1GB-8G-802-11-b-g...item1c55208179
It's 85 now. I don't know if it does what you want, not too familiar in this area, but it seems to. Can also be used as a mediocre quality hdmi in capture card.
here is maybe a review:

Problem is, my current DVD player is overheating, would the same thing occur with the Tronbox ?
