I am in the first stages of editing a large video project, and intend to produce it onto DVD and VHS.

I don't plan on buying a burner very soon...I'll get one as soon as I'm finished editing all the video using Adobe Premier and After Effects.

I want to know what is the best Blank DVD-R media that has shown to work good in nearly any standalone DVD player. I really don't want people complaining to me about a video that won't play, and that they paid good money for.

Unfortunately, you can't guarantee that a certain disc will play.

It depends on more than the disc. I've used Pioneer discs that don't play fully in some players.

It also depends on what authoring software you use.

While someone may tell you "Brand X" works in the most players, you may find that it dosn't work in yours.

Right now trial and error is probably the best way to go.

  3. I've stuck to name-branded dvd-r's, I'm less inclined to risk cheaper unbranded disks to 4.7gig of data/video.

The cheapest I've found (at $5 each ) is actually Apple's branded disks. The Apple ads make a big deal about editing your own DVD's, so I figured the disks have to be pretty compatible with set-top players. I've had no problems (*) so far. There's also a combatibility list at...

    http://www.apple.com/dvd/compatibility/

...where I made sure my Sony DVD player was on it. Oh, the disks also work fine on Sony Playstation 2 (haven't tried my xbox yet).

(*) OK, one problem...I tried burning a DVD using Recordnow 3.03 that I got free with my PC; I followed the guide at...

    http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/derrow/recnow.html

...using "UDF with Joilet..." file system type, which I thought was wrong but I tried it anyway. I also had the VIDEO_TS folder in lower case (video_ts). The burned disk played fine on my pc but wasn't recognised by my playstation 2.

    Was this using Apple's discs?

If so, it's the SOFTWARE causing the compatability problem.

Like I said, trial and error.

  6. You might want to try making an image file before burning. I had the EXACT same problem until I did this. Somehow burning the VIDEO_TS folder directly simply would not be recognized on the standalone players. I used a LOT of different burning software as well. Never worked until I made an image and then burned THAT.

To get back to the topic, I just thought I would offer my personal experience. I have used Verbatim and TDK DVDR and DVDRW discs. I have also used DVDR's that I purchased from cdrecordable.com (AWESOME price point @ less than $2 each!). I have not had a problem recording to, or playing any of them (DVDR adn DVDRW) in my Sony DVP-NS700P standalone DVD player. They also all work in my less expensive Panasonic DVD player. They are both less than a year old though. My older Sony DVP-S7700 will not play them.

  7. ...burning a DVD using Recordnow 3.03 that I got free with my PC...

Yes I used Apple disks, whick work fine when I burn with Nero 5578...so I know it's probably the settings in recordnow.

I say probably because I would like to know if anyone has successfully burned a dvd-video using RecordNow. I followed someone elses settings and it didn't work, though I'm sure selecting Joilet was the problem. I'm loathed to waste yet another disk when I can burn just fine with nero.

Oh damn, forgot to check the Apple disks in my xbox- they work fine on my psx2 and my sony dvd player. I heard rumors that the xbox can't deal with dvd-r/rw's...
