  1. I took 2 VHS to Costco and they will convert them to a single DVD.
How do I take the first 10 mins of the DVD, cut it out and transfer that to a video file that I can post online?

Do I use DVDFab Decrypter to do DVD to avi or mp4?
Then do I use something to cut the total video file to only the first 10 mins?

How on earth do you have over 9 years of membership and 777 posts and need to ask questions like you were a newbie? What the hell have you been doing here for all this time? And what exactly have you been saying or asking in your 777 posts that makes you unable to already know the answers to those questions in your post?

There are these crazy things called "video editors" that can "take the 10 mins of the DVD, cut it out and transfer that to a video file". My suggestion would be to edit first, then convert, but it's shameful that you don't already know even that. That's as much as I'm willing to say.

I hope for your sake that you got hacked and that posting came from some hacker.

Some people aren't as technically inclined as others. I've only used DVDfab before for simple extracting entire DVD movies but to video files, but never from dvd to avi/mpg/mp4 and not for editing.

Maybe because other people can't be bothered to figure out the answers for themselves with a quick search?

You can cut out pieces of a VOB file using MPEG2Cut2, among many other tools. As for converting to something you can post online, is that for some place like YouTube, maybe? They'll accept VOB input. Or convert it to MP4 using something like Vidcoder or Video To Video Converter among many other programs..

Yes, to post on youtube, facebook, etc. I didnt know those accept VOB directly. I always thought it had to be mp4, avi or mpg. When I extract DVD to my computer with DVDFab, its usually in. Video_TS files, dont know if it will do it to avi. I need to check.

    Then edit it.

  6. You can open VOB files with Mpg2Cut2. Clips you save from Mpg2Cut2 will be MPG files.

YouTube does, although, as jagabo says, when you cut a piece with MPEG2Cut2, it comes out as an MPG. I forgot that as I don't use MPEG2Cut2 much myself. I know nothing about Facebook and what formats it accepts.

Inside of the VIDEO_TS are all the DVD files, the VOBs, IFOs, and BUPs. Open the VOB you want in MPEG2Cut2 and cut out the piece you want. I'd feed it into a program to reencode it because if you upload directly to YouTube they'll get the aspect ratio wrong.

How do I preview these files, without first converting it to some video file, like avi or mpg or mp4?
You can open your VOB files with Mpg2Cut2, view them, and save out clips as MPG files. No reencoding. Just remuxing from VOB to MPG.

Most media players will play VOB files, even the full IFO/VOB set with menus and everything. Except Windows Media Player -- which is worthless.

Crap. But making it crappier won't help.

VHS might look "OK" played directly to a TV. but it looks like crap to digital processors and encoders. I understand that many of these quick-conversion shops use decent players and some filtering gear, but that's not enough -- and some use nothing at all, they just play to an encoder/recorder and let chaos follow its own course.

Even with retail VHS, some are competent jobs that still need some correction, some VHS prints are total garbage, and most home-made stuff is the pits. The difference between capturing to lossless formats, doing some clean up, and using a good encoder/authoring app is a quantum leap. Literally, doing it that way would equate to thousands of $$$ in time/labor.

    Some givens in this world:

    o Death
    o Taxes
o jman98 being a douche, as you so accurately point out.

Off his meds again, I suspect, since he IS fully capable of giving often excellent advice, occasionally without a "douchey" comment.

I'm from the US, as are most (all?) of the others in this thread, as far as I'm aware. If you have anything actually useful to contribute to the discussion we're all ears.

You may have noticed that jyeh74 mentioned taking VHS tapes to Costco to be converted to DVD. Do you think Costco would offer such a service if there wasn't a demand for it? If you do then you don't know Costco.

  16. JimboS - questions about VHS will be still here even decades later, there is still going to be some wedding somewhere stored recorded to VHS, home video, or just some favorite, nostalgic show, clip, you know some "Rosebud" value that needs to be transferred to digital format ...

You don't know how to post any information actually relevant to the thread? jyeh74 asked how to cut pieces from a VOB and you're spouting gibberish about Europeans and obsolete video formats.

VHS isn't "dead" to someone who has precious, irreplaceable video on VHS tape and wants to transfer it to some other medium. Telling them VHS is dead is pointless and stupid.

No, your VHS died 20 years ago. How long did you think that $30 no-name piece of crap would last? If you traveled anywhere outside your cave for a look at the world around you, you'd find that the good ol' USA is one of the most restricted countries on the planet when it comes to the variety of electronics and entertainment sources available. Hell, even DVD mastering labs and recording studios in the States rely on tube equipment that's available only in Europe. It's a waste of bandwidth to post gingoistic, culturally naive crap if that's all you have to offer.
