  1. is there a program which can remove subtitles from a movie which have been embedded into the .avi

    You mean they're hardcoded? As in no separate subtitle file? I've never seen a video where I hated the subs enough to try something so silly as remove hardcoded subs.

    Try doing a web search on, say, "video how to remove hardcoded subtitles". You'll see why.

    Basically, if they're hard coded, you'd have to reencode the video, and you won't get perfect results by any means irrespective of the loss you'll get with reencodiing.

    There is nothing underneath hard coded subtitles. It's not a layer superimposed on the video. If you've ever seen watermark removal, it's the same thing. Possible but I can't help you. I'd never do it.
