  1. Hello,

    When you check the details for VCD/SVCD/XVCD/XSVCD pages on the menu on the left of this site There isn't a defenition for the next format;

    352x288 (PAL) MPEG2 !!

Does it have an accepted set name or might I call it a XVCD or/and XSVCD....

  2. 352x288 (PAL) mpeg1 is a VCD, mpeg2 can be DVD but you are authoring a VCD with it so it is a XVCD.

  4. I would say your making an svcd (Mpeg2) with an invalid resolution (look here: http://www.uwasa.fi/~f76998/video/svcd/faq/#1.2 ). I would call it an xsvcd. I've made several of these (also 352 x 288) and they play just fine in my philips dvd710!

  5. Everything is up to the multiplexing you choose. If you choosed VCD non-standard than it is a XVCD, Mpeg2 than it is a XSVCD.

  6. Jack do you mean that is the problem with Philips (that won't play SVCD's) ? Do they only play the lower resolution ? I though the problem was MPEG2...

  7. To Mars-L:

Nearly all philips dvd-players are very well capable of playing SVCD. Sometimes they play it right out of the box, sometimes it needs a little help. For example: when I bought my dvd710 about 2 years ago, the machine DID NOT play SVCD at all but there were reports of this machine being able to in region 1 (i'm in R2 - netherlands). YOU CAN (yourself) set it to R1 and be able to play SVCD and right after make your machine multizone (otherwise you wouldn't be able to play R2-discs). This works! Check the following forum and site:

    http://regionhacks.datatestlab.com/cgi-bin/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=DVD+Re...=20&LastLogin=

    http://home.zonnet.nl/jeroenverhaar/

There is a way to achieve it for all philips players but be carefull - don't mess around to much with your player or it could be locked in a region or even damaged.

My player plays mpeg-2 in any combination: 352/480/720 x 288/576

Hope this answers some of your questions

  8. Hallo Jack,

    Klinkt goed maareuhhh...

But is there any way to make a SVCD in such a way it plays standard on a Philips 710 ? My parents have got a 710 (rotding ) I prefer my Hiteker/Apex600) And they don't wanna play with One4All remotes nor changing settings, and sadly enough it ain't easy to change the firmware as easy as on my Hiteker (which is sometimes a Sampo, other times a Haier ) because of the firmware exchange).
When you burn with Nero there are options to use alternate settings as using a different directory name etc....
Have you experimented with that already ?
I'm looking for a real easy way to make that 710 play SVCD, that easy that even my dad dares to take the risc. Now for every family-DV-movie I am making 2 versions a VCD and a SVCD.....Would be great to let teir machine play SVCD too.

  9. Hoi Mars-L,

We zullen het maar in het Engels houden,

As far as I know there is no way the 710 (R2) will play SVCD without feeding it the RC6 remote codes (One4all). If you know for sure you have the right codes then using this method is pretty low-risk. I did it about a year and a half ago and I never had any problems. So as far as I know this is the only way.

As for trading, only unless you're interested in my homemovies (the kids are so adorable!.... ) cause that's about all I have on (S)VCD.

  10. Nahhh...My kids are already on H8-DV for over 10 hours so don't need yours too ), you're one step ahead of me, 'cause I haven't found a way to get an acceptable SVCD convertion. Even Premiere with CinemaCraft doesn't give a quality that comes close to the DV quality.

I have a Philips 711. I to had problems using standard templates with TEMPEnc. my SVCDs would come out stuttering, play for a second the quite etc.

However I have created a template myself, with upped audio to 48000 and certain other setting. The playback is fantastic. If I can help further, let me know.

No firmware updates, no remote required.

  12. Hey Tommo,

Your right.... I allways use 48000Hz audio as well. It seems that Philips players give A/V sync problems at 44000Hz (especially after FF/REW). Setting the audio to 48000Hz fixes this. Using the standard templates however, i never had any stuttering - only sync problems but i think the 711 uses other firmware than the 710 so maybe that's why.

I use AVISYNTH to framerve from Premiere into TEMPEnc, then use a modified SVCD template, the results from a SONY TVR120 are excellent.
