Converting TS MPEG2 to MPEG2

I demuxed an MPEG2 with TS Muxer. When I remuxed it gives an MPEG 2 .tS file. If I want to change this to MPEG2 can I just change the file name to ".mpg" or do I actually need to remux it to MPEG2?

yes, you need to remux into mpeg2 program stream (mpeg2-ps) => this usually has .mpg or .mpeg extension

you can't just rename the extension, a program stream is different than a transport stream
