  1. Just bought 99 min cd-rs from CompUSA. 16 of them in slim cases for $10. I encoded 51 mins. of video using the mighty TMPGenc using the following settings:

    2-pass vbr 2325 avg./3800 max/1500 min
    10 bit DC comp. prec.
    very slow motion prec. search
little bit of sharpen, simple color correction, and clipped frame (to make nice sharp black bars)

The resulting file was 972 mb and it filled the cd up to the 98 min. mark in Nero. It took 6 hrs to encode on my home-build (Athlon 1700+, MSI K7T266 Pro2 mobo, 768mb DDR ram) but was really worth it! It looks perfect to me.

I thought you could only buy 80 minutes CD-R/W's? Can you tell me more about the 99 minute CD-R?

  3. When I asked the guys at the counter at CompUSA if they had 90 or 99 min cd-rs they told me they never heard of them but I found them right away on the shelf. They are CompUSA brand 99 min/850 mb/ 24X compatible cd-r. The sku# is 282323. These cds are compatible with Nero (select "Overburn CD") and my GE 1101p dvd player plays it with no problem.

Why you dont encode with DVD2SVCD+CCE/TMPGEnc? You'd get 68min+ to a regular 80min CDR and much more to 99min CDR?

    C.K.

  8. But, remember that not all CD-RW burners can actually burn the full 99 minutes, even if you tell Nero to do so...

You bring up a very important point. Before anybody goes out and orders these blanks, be sure to check burner compatibility tables at http://www.disc4you.com/news/99min.html first. I learned this the hard way. . my crappy (and soon to be replaced) Philips 8x4x32x burner can overburn with no problem, but it cannot even "see" a 99 minute disc in the drive, just as if nothing were in the platter. Of course I spent $20 before I knew this. . .
If anybody is interested in a decent and inexpensive burner that can handle 90/99 blanks, try Pricewatch. I just picked up a LG 24x10x40x brand new for $62 by searching www.pricewatch.com. This baby has a huge 8MB buffer, Just Link Technology , and can do DAE up to 40-42x. Cyberdrive is even cheaper, though I am not sure if they can overburn (their site says they cannot, though I have heard otherwise).

I looked at a box last night.
    It says "16X CD-R Media, 16 Pack"

It also says High Capacity on the BOX.

If you want me to send ya some for fREE
because you are afraid to risk the $9.99 + shipping,
I'd be happy to. Just post a reply.

BTW: These disks are Looooow quality. The only guarantee
is that some will go bad after you've used them for a while.
I mean it in the nicest way.

  13. Excuse me, Videoguy, but that is a MOST OFFENSIVE graphic, especially to be posted on Good Friday.

If you want to make poilitical statements about religion, please make them someplace else.

  14. I have an LG 8120 and have no problem burning well past 90 min. I think
I have gone as far as 97+ min. (I generally calculate the bit rate to
99 min and then back off some. No sense in waiting on an encode for
a day and not being able to burn the disk.)

Generally, My 99min CompUSA disks play fine at first. Then....
They start to have some freeze problems after about a month
of use (ya know, kid movies get played over and over).
The 99s don't seem to be as bad as the Compusa 80s though.
Those guys are crap. I'm not talkn making coasters... I mean
after they work fine for a while and then they start to fail.

BTW: The easy answer is to zip the bin and save it on 2 other disks.
When the disk goes bad it should take you about 10 min to unzip
and re-burn at 24x with that LITEON .
I mean it in the nicest way.

1.) 23 March was not Good Friday; today (Good Friday) is 29 March
2.) I am a practicing Catholic--would I put anything up that I thought was dgerading to the church?
3.) That is not the Pope--it is BILL GATES, and thus is not a religous statement; it is a parody. Get your eyes checked.

It's funny that somebody would bitch about a sarcastic graphic when just a few threads away, people are threatening to shoot each other and that doesn't seem to warrant anybody's disgust?

  16. the biggest problem with low quality cdr's are the burning speed........does the cd-r say "16x compatible" or "16x certified".....if itz printed certified the company has cetain iso9000(1so9001) standards they have to meet before release of such product........if it compatible......it can be used up to that speed but not certified to work.
and make sure u never burn faster than a cd-r is rated........even after burn it might seem to work corectly but big chance of havin unnoticible errors.

    i have a lite-on (40x-write/12x-rewrite/48x-read) burner.

and if i wanna write cds faster than 32x i cant use the cheapos.....they burn fine but eventually i find an error or errors in the music or video or data.
