Pioneer DV-420V-K ... can't play DVD+RW or DVD-RW discs

Just purchased this DVD player. Am unable to play DVD+RW & DVD-RW discs that play on other DVD players. When I insert the disc the front screen displays "NO DISC". Help!

does it list those formats on the box it came in? if yes return it as defective. if not oh well...

The product brochure states:

DVD+R/+RW compatibility:
Only DVD+R/DVD+RW discs recorded in ‘Video Mode (DVD Video Mode)’ which have been finalized, can be played back. However, some editing made during the recording may not be played back accurately.

DVD-R/-RW compatibility:
Compatible formats: DVD-Video, Video Recording (VR)*
- Edit points may not play exactly as edited; screen may go momentarily blank at edited points.
- The player can not play unfinalized discs.
- The unit can play MP3/WMA/MPEG-4 AAC/JPEG or DivX video/WMV files on DVD-R/-RW.

* Dual-Layer DVD-R (Video Mode, Video Recording Mode, CPRM)

Just purchased this DVD player.

If you bought it on Craigslist then you're yet another sucker who foolishly believed it was IMPOSSIBLE to get cheated there.

The player clearly sounds defective but to rule out some kind of error on your part, can you play those DVDs on PC? If yes, then you've got a defective player. Pioneer makes good players and they're not know for being too fussy about media brands like some players are.

I bought it on Amazon. Yes, the DVDs play on my PC.

are they dvd? do they have video_ts and audio_ts folders and the correct ifo, bup, and vob structure? computers can play about anything but standalones often require strict compliance to standards.

Yes, they are DVD discs. Yes, they do have video_ts and audio_ts folders as well as the correct ifo, etc., structure. Am returning the machine. Thanks for everybody's help.
