    What camera?
    What format?
    What resolution?
    What inputs on the laptop/PC?
    What streaming software?
    What budget?

Most anything is possible with infinite budget.

Simplest solution is a standard def camcorder* connected composite coax or S-Video (better) to a USB capture device supported by Vidblaster.

Digital solutions are more problematic and expensive due to cable length.

Exception may be a security type camera connected Ethernet but it must be compatible with Vidblaster input.

    * Noise is the enemy so get the best camcorder you can find/borrow/rent. Vidblaster "Studio" or "Broadcast" has a higher quality deinterlacer.

he is going to be streaming 640x480

also 20m (~66ft) is too long for HDMI or Firewire without repeaters.

eHow says this. No that isn't going to work.

Most camcorders will have composite NTSC or PAL out. Many will have S-Video out.

These are the "USB Frame Grabber" products mentioned in that FAQ

These devices take video cable in and plug into the laptop USB port.

    Cheap Cables (should work)
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10207

Quality cables (recommended for 20+ meters)

If this is important, I'd get the S-Video Breakout Cable set for the most reliable cable connection. This scheme uses two large coax cables to separately carry luma and chroma with S-Video adapters at each end.

  12. EasyCap on Amazon is like $8 & you can connect your camera to your computer with it. It's for capturing though but take a look at it as it comes with a USB connector.

  13. You can get a wireless A/V sender off ebay under $30, but you still need a capture device to get the video into your PC. If your PC doesn't have a video IN port the Easycap device would do the job. Only problem is getting a quality product from ebay is hit and miss; there are many clones sold as easycap. Your best bet is to stick with something from Pinnacle, Hauppage or Honestech. If you're PC is running XP, you can get quality older devices cheap on ebay. Look for dead brands like Plextor, ADS and Pyro.

It depends how time critical this project is and how important.

Do you have time to test the cheapest alternatives or do you need shortest path to a reliable result?

If the latter, I would choose one of the capture devices verified by VidBlast and buy the breakout version of S-Video for 20m cable length. The good thing about the breakout cable is it can be used for S-Video or composite.

    Yes standard def S-Video recommended.

    Standard def composite next best.

That fits a ~$200 budget. You can get better performance by spending more.

You should be able to borrow a camcorder or rent one cheap.

Why are you looking at HD cams when you want to stream 640x480?

Do you have more budget than I thought you had? Next step up is around $3000.

By the way, which streaming service do you plan to use?

Have you used Vidblast software before?
