DVD Writing fails at the last minute

Hi All,

I am on Windows 7 in a Compaq Presario Laptop.

My DVD writer can read all disks, but while writing it fails at the end of the burning process. It hangs for a long time before it declaring the burn failure. It renders the DVD unusable.

I deleted the device from the device manager a couple of times. It comes back while restarting, but getting the same error.

I also tried multiple burner software like: Nero, Ashampoo and Imgburn. Same error. Imgburn log show no errors but the DVD is unusable after burning.


I am attaching the Nero log here. Can anybody help? i will be grateful.

Normally I would blame low quality media, but your Disc Manufacturer ID is MCC and these should be top notch. I've got an Optiarc burner in an old iMac I have on loan from work and I can tell you that it's as bad a burner as I've ever seen. I would NEVER buy one. I'm going to blame the burner on this one.

There are 2 things you can do that might help.
1) You can look for firmware updates for the burner.
2) You can burn at a slower speed. This sometimes leads to success when the burner has previously been making coasters. I would recommend not burning at any speed above 4x.

It's most likely the burner but just for fun try shrinking the file size by 100MB to see if it will finalize, some writers have problems writing to the edge.

The burning process completes successfully if I push the DVD back in the drive manually. The DVD was also usable/good.

I think it is normal with Imgburn to eject the disk once, which I was not aware.

I think Nero failed because don't eject and reinsert the disc, the drive never has to reinitialise it - and that's is the point of failure.

Is there a way to make Nero do it properly, by reinstalling the driver or something.

Un-check the "VERIFY" box while burning with ImgBurn(especially with a laptop drive/burner). ImgBurn created a perfectly useable disc without completing the VERIFY stage....Nero did not. Stop using Nero.
