This is probally a really stupid question to you guys, but what should I look for in terms of quality when dowloading movies? I have converted a few avi movies to vcd but the quality of the video is like watching a 70's porno flick. Any help is greatly appreicated.

when you download a movie the avi asf is not what to look for.after the name of the movie you will see something like ts,tc,scr,cam.....you want to get the scr its the best copy. if you start with a crappy copy 9like a cam) the encoded result will be crappy. hope that helps you out.

If the movies come in 2 halves and are about 150 to 300 mb each, then its probablya Cam-copy,if its about 700 to 750mb and is DivX then its as good as you'll get for an AVI.
Depending on which software, templates and settings you use ,you can then burn it as a VCD ,SVCD, XVCD etc which will vary the quality and the size of the resulting MPEG. -
