I couldn't find a real explanation for them anywhere:

    1) What exactly is "finishing"? (As in "finishing system"). Details would be welcome.
    2) What is the difference between color correction and color grading?

    Thanks.

    I thought they were universal.
Anywhere from Media Composer, Premiere, Final Cut, to Vegas and Pinnacle Studio.

It's mostly used in Avid and FCP.

    1. As in "finish to tape".

Generally it means the complete process after fine-tuning the cutting and applying primary color corrections, such as applying secondary color corrections and titlings. On a CLIPSTER® video system this can include the finalization of a project. See Finalizing.

    2. "Grading" is to adjust for desired effect, while "correction" is fixing problems.

As always, definitions can be used differently. So be mindful of what people/programs may have changed it to (incorrectly or not). For example, I saw an Avid video that used the word "render" when the presenter really meant "encode". (Rendering and encoding are NOT synonyms!)

Much of this dates to film processing and was heavily influenced by union job classifications. Each piece of the process was classified with job rules and pay scale. The person doing the job had to be trained and in theory was interchangeable with another doing the same job.
