    Hi all,

I'm trying to capture some old VHS tapes to DV format using an AIWA GX915 VCR and a Pinnacle Moviebox DV. The VCR is connected to the Moviebox thru composite+analog stereo audio cables and the Moviebox is connected to my PC via firewire.

Here is my problem: when I start to capture the image quality is quite good until the first few static frames (which are typical of VHS scene changes) are reproduced. This event always causes the introduction of a very annoying noise along the whole picture that will keep affect all the video capture.

If I change the input video source, using the "select" button of the moviebox, and then I go back to the composite source, the noise disappears until the next playback of static frames which introduces the noise again. I also noted that disconnect the compisite cable fom the moviebox and then reconnect also does the trick of temporarly remove the noise.

Just to give you a better idea of what kind of noise I'm talking about, here is an example (please zoom to full size).

I also captured the same frame without the noise just by doing the trick of changing the input video source few moments earlier. Here is the result which is quite acceptable to me.

Do you have any suggestion to try to figure this issue out? I was thinking of buying a different firewire capture card like the ADVC 110 or 300. Do you think this will help?

I also tried to postprocess the captured file using some denoisers like FFT3DFilter and Convolution3D using Avisynth but they were not able to denoise the video.

Is anybody aware of some kind of denoise filter that can remove such kind of noise?

    Thanks in avance.

  2. fft3dfilter should get rid of that noise "fingers in the nose", see all my previous posts from the lasts few days.
You've got also neat probably best suited here as it's some kind of grid pattern you're dealing with

Post a video sample if you can (unprocessed)

  4. This noise is very coarse especially on the high frequencies harder to remove than i thought initially, try neat

  5. It sounds like the loss of sync is causing the Moviebox to screw up. It would be better to address the problem there than to fix it by filtering afterward. A full frame TBC would probably help.

Thanks a lot for your time.

By "neat" you mean this, right? I actually already tried to use the demo version for Virtual Dub but I didn't get to denoise the whole frame. Some frame sections still are noise affected.

I was thinking if it would probably better to figure out how I can avoid the moviebox from introducing such a noise instead of trying to get rid of the noise.

    Do you agree?

    Thanks for your answer.

Just for my clarification: do you think adding a TBC like this in the chain should avoid the moviebox form screw up and introduce the noise?

Yes, I believe so. But I don't have any direct experience with the Moviebox.
