  1. Hi,

I want to transfer my *.tod files (JVC GZ-HD 30 Camcorder, Full HD MPEG 2 TS) to Bluray Disk. I have two different programs: Sony Vegas Pro 8.0 and Cyberlink PowerDirector 8. While I like the user interface of Vegas very much, only Powerdirector is able to use smart rendering for the video stream. The audio stream has to be converted anyway (MPEG 1 Layer 2 to AC-3). Vegas can use smart rendering only with a few number of file types (DV-AVI).

Do you know other programs that have a professional user interface like Vegas, but can use smart rendering with Full HD MPEG2 files?

PS: Please excuse my poor English.

there is an option to enable no re-compress long gop video in the vegas settings. it may work with yours. or update to pro 9, which offers more support.

  3. Thanks for your reply.

I have enabled this option, but it doesn’t work with MPEG 2 HD (only with DV-AVI and a few other formats). Not sure, if it will work with Vegas Pro 9 – and keep in mind the high price for the update.

Check "smart render" in Vegas help. Vegas Pro 9 does the above. Version 8 does most of these.

I got it to work with HDV project setting in Version 8. Remember that source, project and export settings must be the same to get smart render to work.

  6. This is the list of supported file types in Vegas Pro 8 (german help file). MPEG 2 is missing. Is that the reason?

  7. HDV is listed, but is only 1440 x 1080. My files are 1920 x 1080 (Full HD). I will try to change the camcorder's settings, because is supports a HDV compatible mode. If that works, I will record at 1440 x 1080 in future. But that is no solution for my actual problem.

    Try 1440x1080i first.

HDV is MPeg2. Try modifying the HDV project template to 1920x1080i (square pixel PAR). This works in Pro 9.

You will know it is working when the preview window goes black and shows "No Recompression Required" during render.

  9. I have used exactly these project settings. No success.

I have tried Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum instead. Same poor result.

It might make a difference to start with the HDV project setting before making changes.

  11. When I change the project settings to „HDV“ and change the resolution to 1920 x 1080, Vegas automatically switches to the template „HD 1920 x 1080 25i“.

I have noticed that the rendering time is a bit shorter, if I set the deinterlace method to “none”. I have used “blend fields” when changing the resolution to DVD, because Vegas needed that setting for downsizing.

  12. Hi everyone, sorry for bringing up something abit old here, but I am having abit of a problem with trying to do some Smart Rendering with Premiere Pro CS3 with the MPEG Pro HD 4 plugin.

I have tried everything I cant seem to get any export to do 'Smart Rendering' all the options are wanting me to re-encode, I dont even know if 'Smart Rendering' is even an option or like a tick box in here, does anyone else have this similar issue?

The JVC files may be non-standard in some way. These Japanese companies try to block each other at the consumer level to create "lock-in". You may have to transcode to MXF in Vegas.

not sure cs3 did any smart rendering at all. it might have been added in cs4. cs3 definitely didn't smart render mpeg-4.

[edit] if you mean the $160 mainconcpet plugin, then yes it says it does but how you get it to work i don't know. i've never had much luck with cs3/4/5 plugins.

  16. even with the MPEG Pro HD 4 plugin? I'm pretty sure it was made to do so with the plugin installed, it even confirmed it with me, because when I was trying the settings with Auto GOP enabled, the summary window says:

Warning: MPEG Auto GOP feature enabled!
Warning: To enable Smart Rendering set Auto GOP = OFF!
and thus when I did, I still cant find anywhere to enable smart rendering. I am very confused, even the manual doesnt specifically say where or how to do smart rendering. I am very confused a little help?
