avi to m2ts?

I've just treated myself to a new Sony Bravia TV that will play videos off a USB stick or hard drive, however i'm having trouble getting it to work.
It seems that most of the supported file types are only supported up to a resolution of *x576 which is no good for HD.
It will however play HD .m2ts files.

Every guide i've looked at seems to want to convert FROM .m2ts to something else. How can I convert files TO .m2ts?

Original files are either .avi or .mkv
