Newbie question, connecting speakers to A/V receiver

I guess this is a dumb question but I'd rather be sure about this.
Currently I have a "home theater" (the DVD with the 5.1 surround included) It's a samsung HT-TZ312, and I bought a sony blu-ray player, I can listen to surround sound from the DVD player through a digital audio in connection the samsung DVD has.
Currently I am thinking of purchasing a Denon A/V receiver (AVR 1611) and I was wondering if it was possible to connect my current speakers to that receiver. I do plan to upgrade the speakers also, but I was thinking in the meantime if that'll do.

the speakers should have wire connected to the back of the old one you can more to the new one. if the new one has more power be careful not to blow out the old speakers by turning the volume up to high.

"Home Theater" all-in-one packages have speakers that are usually proprietary to them in terms of power handling, connector type, impedance, crossover frequencies, etc. It's certainly possible to use speakers from one "home theater" system with a another dedicated A/V receiver but with so many variables, the possibility for damage is ever present; the whole thing is best left for a pro to wrestle with.
