So there are a few settings in the XviD configuration that I'm not sure about. First, I was wondering if enabling chroma optimizer would improve quality or make it worse? Also, what numbers should I put for quantizer restrictions? I am going for the best possible quality. Thanks in advance!!

Chroma Optimizer: This helps to reduce the problem of chroma noise, where large patches of red or blue can have random noise and therefore causes macroblocks when the encoder tries to encode these noises. If you have that problem, use it.

Quantizer: Gives you preset quality, but little control of size. 1 is best. 2 is about the same as the original quality. 3 is a good compromise for filesize VS quality. If you want a preset filesize, two pass may be a better choice.

Thank you very much for the info! I was referring to the quantizer restrictions in the "Quantization" tab. Do you know what number I should use in there to achieve the best quality? Thanks!

Not really. But you might look here for more information: http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/xvid_setup.html

  5. If you are going for best possible quality you are using Target Quantizer mode with the quantizer set to 1, the Quantizer Ratio set to 1, and the Quantizer Offset set to 0. In Target Quantizer mode the min/max quantizer settings are ignored. (You're probably not doing this because the files would be as big as an MPEG 2 source, and there's hardly any visual difference between Q=1 and Q=2.) The min/max quantizers are used in bitrate mode but there is usually no reason to change them from the default min=1, max=31. If you restrict the range the encoder may have problems meeting the requested bitrate.
