Split recording a continuos live stream

How to record a live video stream into several segments with a maximum duration, or maximum size, or maximum number of frames?

I want to grab a live stream (either HTTP, RTSP, MMS, RTMP, etc.) and record it into these files :

rec-1.mpg (or .avi , or .mov, or .flv, etc., it makes no difference)
rec-2.mpg
rec-3.mpg
...
...
rec-n.mpg
...
...

each recorded file must be long, for example, at most 500 frames.

Which program enables me to do this, and how?

yes that's what i meant
why should it be not feasible?

the recorder starts recording the stream to the file segment-1.mpg, starting from frame 0
...
when the recorder reaches the frame number 500 ,
it closes the file and opens a new one: segment-2.mpg
then, it starts recording frame 501 to the new file, until it reaches frame 1000,
...
and so on

it doesn't seem so impossible
