So far, I think the new features are major improvements to the email arena, especially archiving and multi-accounts sorted out.
However, this makes me wonder where Mozilla is headed these days:
Mozilla Messaging (abbreviated MoMo) is a wholly owned, for-profit subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation.[1] It is broadly tasked with aspects of the Mozilla Project that focus on interpersonal communications, such as instant messaging and e-mail. Its main focus is developing Mozilla Thunderbird.

I'm still on the 2.x version, as I'm waiting for Lightning (calendar add-on) to come out of beta before upgrading.

As far as the "for-profit" bit you highlighted, (shrug). Mozilla Corp is also listed as a taxable (i.e. for-profit) entity on Wikipedia responsible for Firefox.

But, here's the organizational break-down from Mozilla itself:

I put it on my wife's laptop and she likes it. However I did have to turn off the message indexing feature as it slowed things down. Donadagohvi (Cherokee for "Until we meet again")

I've been running it since it came out. The betas of the Lightning and Provider for Google Calendar extensions have worked just fine the entire time as well. I wouldn't let that stop you from upgrading. What I really like is how adding a new email account is much easier now. When I put in basic info for a Gmail account it pulls most setting for it automatically. The default Smart Folders view is annoying but easily fixed. Overall it's solid with a few minor quirks.
