why do i have a output HDMI for high definition playing in my dvd player if the dvds are 720x480 ntsc, and the 1280x720 divx files cant be played because of HD not supported.
the manual says i can use it upto 1080p ... so how could i do this?

Component or HDMI is required for all HD content. For Blu-Ray, HDMI is needed. Most players will allow standard DVD playback or sometimes downsample content output on other outputs.

The resolution restriction on Divx is a chipset limitation.

Your TV will upscale DVD if you send 480i or 480p.

Your DVD player can also upscale DVD to 720p, 1080i or 1080p. Then the HDTV will rescale to native resolution.

Try all ther DVD player settings. See which looks better to you with your TV. Sometimes the DVD player wins with a low end HDTV. A premium HDTV often beats a low end DVD player.

As for playing files, a DVD player is usually limited to 720x576 max.
