Newbie question on sony vegas, and x264.exe

I'd like to be able to create videos in an H.264 .mkv format, and have Sony Vegas 8.0b. I've also gona and downloaded https://www.videohelp.com/tools/x264_Encoder which works like a charm in the command line, but I'd prefer to not have to render to some scrubby format in vegas, then reencode to .mkv.

video is just a series of frames or stills. A frame server "feeds" individual frames to another application

In this case a "dummy avi" or signpost is made. It's only a few kb big.

To other programs, this "dummy avi" looks like a real video. So you feed this as input into x264 (or any other program), while leaving vegas open to render. In this fashion, you can connect vegas to other programs like x264

One potential problem is debugmode doesn't work with 32-bit mode in vegas (might be important if you are color correcting or doing effects)

If your final goal is a 2pass encode with x264 , and you have heavy effects in vegas (cpu heavy & slow to render), it's often faster to use a lossless intermediate instead (because you only have to render the heavy effects once vs. twice)
