I heard that DVD+R is better for data and DVD-R is better for video playback (dvd video format?).

Normally, I burn avi files as data onto DVD+R's to be played on standalone divx players.

Should I burn them instead on DVD-Rs or stick with the +Rs?

I have used both DVD-R and DVD+r for videos. If you use a good quality disk, you should not have any problem playing them on any stand alone player.

    Total & complete Bull$H!T!!

I also have used both over time, but i exclusively use +R for everything, espc. dvd video, just for the fact i can change the booktype to DVD-ROM & you can't on -R's.

As long as it's good quality media it really should not make any difference.

Older DVD players may exhibit a preference for one type over another, but with any decent modern player, both +R and -R should be OK. As Noahtuck says, what you heard is not correct. If you search on the internet, you can find some old white papers that talk about technical reasons why DVD+R is superior to DVD-R, but practical experience seems to indicate that in reality they are pretty much the same. I would say, in my opinion, that DVD+RW and DVD+R DL are definitely superior to their -R counterparts, but that's not what you asked about. Use good media for sure and just buy whatever is cheaper. In the USA, "good media" means only Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden.
