  1. You will have to excuse me if this has been posted else where but I thought it would be easier to start a new post.

Can any one please tell me whats the best software to use to produce Screen Caps or Grabs ? I would like to use them to produce 10X8 photos for my own personal use.

I'm running Windows Vista with Asusdvd pre-loaded.

    Many thanks

Just general screen caps ? Or images off a DVD ?

If it is the latter, look at the stickies at the top of the this forum as it has been covered in depth.

The best I've ever used is Video Thumbnails Maker. It can customized like you wouldn't believe, does batch captures, works with just about any type of file, is very fast, etc. I don't donate/buy many programs but this is well worth the $15 i donated.

VirtualDub for screen caps of any video, paste in Photoshop.
The "screengrab!" plugin for Firefox, for web pages, saves to a PNG file.
PRTSCRN for most anything else, paste in Photoshop.

  6. Many thanks for the advice and I have now read the sticky at the top of the lists ( Which I did not see before )
It seams to me as if PowerDvd has the most votes and to be honest I have used this before how ever I did read some where else that it changes the aspect ratio which it did but alas I'm completly ignorant to all these things and they are meaning less to me. The screen grabs I was doing did not look right me may be this explains it.
As I said before in my first post I would like to produce 10x8 photos from the screen grabs which I would normaly run through something like Bitmap Shrinker just to enhance them as I would like to print them out as photos.

So I will give PowerDvd one last go how ever if anyone can come up with a better programme for this it would be great.

Oh before any one asks I produce 10x8 photos as I like to collect Autographs and there's nothing worse than not having a decent photo of a actor in a perticular role hence screen grabs and before anyone says I would gladly purchase (and often do) "offical" photos but sometimes you cant no matter where you look !

    Cheers

    maduncledai,

You might want to try a program called "Moment" by Topaz Labs. It's the easiest way (that I know of) to capture by automatically using multi-frame image stacking with motion compensation. It also allows you to internally set the amounts of noise reduction, sharpness, auto levels, auto color, and zoom level...or you can turn them off, and manually perform the enhancement of the basic "super resolution" (their term, not mine) image it outputs.

I've been using it for a few years, and it works about as well as I could do the job manually, but it's far easier and quicker...which is why I've been using it. However, I've only used it for obtaining the raw materials to put together covers for dvd cases, or dvd disk artwork...which are much smaller than the 8x10 size you're talking about. It's not something I would do, but if that's your goal, I don't have a better suggestion for you.

If you're interested, here's a link to the web page. It says there's a free 30 day trial license available, which means it won't cost you anything to see it it's suitable for your purposes.

I said it "alters the video quality - don't use it" -- and you ask why? I said why. It alters the quality. It gets blurry and the colors shift, as compared to the original. People noticed this years and years ago. Stick to something better, like VirtualDub or another method that doesn't butcher.

Lordsmurf many thanks for your last post although mine did sound a bit sarcastic I can only apologise for this it was late etc etc which is no excuse realy.
I did not know about the problem with powerdvd although I have to admit I couldn't tell the differance. With this in mind I will give your suggestion of Virtualdub a try so many thanks once again.
