I have reinstalled my OS and have noticed that all vids are blocky, as if it was a bad resolution film that has been zoomed. This is not only divx, but also my HD mkv. My videos did not look like this before, so I must have a setting wrong somewhere. Here is how the "blockiness" looks:

I thought at first it was my nvidia drivers, so I went back to a verson I was using before, and it didnt fix it. Also tried reinstalling klite kodec pack.

I even tried playing with the nvidia control panel to tweak quality and also the windows display control panel.

ANY ideas how to make the video smooth again?

  2. The video is being upscaled with a nearest neighbor resizing filter. The usual fix is to update drivers. Make sure you have video hardware acceleration fully enabled (Troubleshoot tab of the video settings advanced dialog). The player also has some control over this -- what player are you using?

I am using vlc or media player classic.

One problem could be hardware acceleration. I am using the newest version of win 7, but before was only a beta version from aound January. I am suspecting this has something to do with it.

    EDIT***

Weird, I just played some files and compared them in WMP, and it looks good!

So, how do I get VLC and MPC to do the same?

  4. Try changing the output device in MPCHC and VLC.

MPCHC: View -> Options -> Playback -> Output -> Directshow Video, try the different settings. You have to exit and restart MPCHC for the change to take effect.

VLC: Tools -> Preferences -> Video -> Display -> Output. I'm not sure if you have to exit and restart or not.

Thanks man, those options did the trick!

I am still wondering why, after all these years using these 2 players, this time I had to piss with settings to get them to look good.

    no matter. Thanks again!

  6. Which output devices didn't work and which ones did you end up using?

On VLC "default" didnt work, and now I have openGL

on media player I had default as well, but then tried got the "old renderer" to work.

Most of the other options woulnt play, or played very jerky in full screen.
possibly time for a graphic card upgrade?
