Hi,
I'm getting sick of VD. I have ffdshow installed and use that to encode and after I spent 3 hours trying to get VD to recognize an .mp4 file unsucessfully, I decided it may be time to use another application. Does avidemux use ffdshow? what other applications use ffdshow? Can I use ffdshow alone to encode videos? I love the configuration (VFW??) possibilities in ffdshow and want to continue to use that with any file I encounter.
thanks

	avidemux does not use ffdshow.

You could use avisynth to decode the mp4 and then open in it virtualdub.

thanks, it worked. but when i did direct stream copy for only a portion of the video, it was HUGE!!! why is that??
-
Because avisynth outputs uncompressed video, so a direct stream copy through virtualdub produces an uncompressed file. Try using Fast recompress instead, and make sure you select a codec and configure it before saving. Read my blog here.

that explains it. I'll compress it and try again.

One thing I did notice however, was after when I tried a video that didn't require avisynth (an mpeg video) I checked the vid bit rate and it was 1500 (original video). I then compressed it as I normally do at a vid bit rate slightly higher than the original and the file was 3x the size of the original. Did the installation of avisynth keep the video from getting compressed correctly hence the large file size?

You're right. I'm sure avisynth has nothing to do with it, but no matter how I encode it, it always comes out about 3x larger than the original. I feel I am hijacking my own post and somebody may also need this info so I will post separately.

btw, i've downloaded mediainfo 2x and can't figure how to use it. There's no application except for the uninstall!

If you right click a video, the option should appear in the context menu

Or you can open mediainfo from the start menu, then use file=>open

I already explained reasons why not to use ffdshow as an encoder in your other thread
