I had to recently reformat my computer. So, naturally, since this was an unplanned reformat I had to start from stratch. Before I even thought about doing much with video, I installed the K-Lite Mega codec pack, along with the latest WMP, and, MPC, editions. But something, somewhere is wrong. I have some files I "acquired," all from usually reliable sources. Yet when I try playing them back, in either WMP, OR, MPC, the video seems like it is a mirror image, as well as upside down. I've checked them through Video Inspector, it confirms that they are valid files, and, that I have the right codecs installed to view these files.
I can't burn them to disc right now, to see if they would play back right after conversion/burning, because my burner is apparently a casualty of the reformat-when a blank is put in it, no program recognizes that there is a blank in the drive, though the programs do seem to recognize the physical presence of the burner.
Has anyone got a clue as to what's going on?
As usual, any, and, all help is welcome, with many thanks in advance.

  2. Installing K-Lite was your problem. Use MPCHC or VLC. They come with most codecs you need built in. If you need some more obscure codecs install ffdshow or the individual codecs you need.

    Update your graphics card drivers.

you were right in that K-Lite was the problem, but probably not in the way you meant. After transferring the files to a flash drive, and, playing them back through that, I had the same problem in playback. So, believing that Google can be as much as a friend in solving these type of problems as this forum is, I found a posting in another forum that suggested that the problem was enabling TOO MANY codecs in K-Lite. So I went back to configuration in K-Lite, disabled a bunch of codecs, and, tried playing back through the flash drive, and, from the files stored on my computer. Apparently I isdbled enough/ the right codecs, because the problem is solved.
Thanks again Jig, hope you're having fun in wherever the place called none is.

  4. Playing a video file via Directshow (WMP, sometimes MPCHC) requires that the system build a "graph" of several filters. This typically includes a file reader (which tells windows an extension is a A/V file, reads the file, performs read ahead buffering, etc.), a file splitter (splits the audio, video, and any other data, into separate streams), audio and video decompressors, maybe a colorspace converter and/or audio converter, and finally audio and video renders (which actually put the video on the screen, and the audio to the audio card).

There is a complicated negotiation that takes place as the system determines what each filter can do and decides which combination of filters will handle a particular video.

The problem with K-Lite is that it blindly installs all kinds of components (not just codecs), many of which are not compatible with each other. And it does not uninstall cleanly. It can be very hard to determine the source of problems when there are hundreds of DirectShow filters installed. You can end up with a totally messed up system.

For future reference (as long as you've been here, you should know this already), use mediainfo or any other format identification program and present that info in your post. The whole "acquired" thing just makes your post look shady and warez-ish.

    Supreme2k;

I use the term "acquired" because in another thread I was participating in, I was told by a mod that the "real" term is not allowed in the forums. But if the information from this mediainfo IS allowed, and, makes things clearer, I'll try it.

The mods told you correctly. However, there is no prohibition against posting info here from Gspot, MediaInfo, etc. You need not specify how you got these files. Some people may ask. Some may not.

    Perfect.

Basically, regardless of warez issues, it's always best to specifically address the file, and not its origin. Any other info tends to sidetrack people.

It reminds me of a Simpson's episode, where 2 politicians were debating:

Birch Barlow: Mayor Quimby, you're well-known, sir, for your lenient stance on crime. But suppose for a second that your house was ransacked by thugs, your family tied up in the basement with socks in their mouths, you try to open the door but there's too much blood on the knob --
Mayor Quimby: What is your question?
Barlow: My question is about the budget, sir.
