I have Vista Basic x64 and use Windows Media Player to play back DVD's with the Cineplayer DVD decoder installed.
WMP plays back my AVI's just fine with good audio but it's a little low when playing back DVD's. I'm wondring if that's a limitation of the codec? I also have WinDVD and use it occasionally. It plays back the audio on DVD's just fine. Could WinDVD being interfering in anyway with WMP playback?

ac3 audio might sound a bit low using some audio decoders. I would try use ac3filter to decode the dvd audio instead.

You might have it installed, but you're not using it to its fullest.

Somewhere in the filter configuration is a way to custom mix the channels and
    increase the volume, if necessary.
