  1. This problem never happened to me before, but recently happened twice and I haven't even a slightest idea how to solve it. First time I just ended up with a divX coded avi, but this time I need to have a DVD as a final product.

Straight to the point: While played on a standalone player that DVD has a very annoying sound i.e. the normal sound is superimposed with a buzz which comes in waves every 2-3 seconds.
When played on a computer - no problem at all.

The original material is DV from my camera, the sound is coded as 384kbps mp2, however I am sure the bitrate is not important because first time the bitrate was different.

I am posting this in "authoring" because I believe the coding is ok (done with 2.5 version of TMPGENC - never had problems with it).
The authoring was done by DVDLab pro - also an old version (3 years at least). There it complained that the video and sound were already muxed but I ignored that warning (had no problems in the past).

Sorry if this problem was already discussed, I just couldn't think of proper keywords to search for.
Any advice would be highly appreciated.

So far I had no chance to try on another standalone, but this guy behaves otherwise well.
    Best wishes,

  2. first i'd try again at the authoring stage. this time let dvdlab demux it. the original mux rate may be wrong. let dvdlab handle that part as it makes the vobs.

if it still sounds bad, post a 5mb section of the audio here so we can take a look at it.

If you play a different DVD - maybe a retail DVD - does it still buzz? If it does, then it is probably a bad cable or connection.

  4. another thing to consider. mp2 audio is not allowed as the only audio on an ntsc dvd. you need ac3 or pcm wav.

  5. OK, thanks, I will try the demuxing done with DVDlab pro.
It is not NTSC, it is a PAL. (Shot at "wide screen mode", and then I encode as 16:9).
Same player has no other problems - plays retail dvd's OK, as well as my own older DVDs, and divX encoded AVIs - no problem.
Yes, I will post a bit of that sound if the abovementioned advice doesn't work. Thank you guys !

  6. Update:

I let the Dvdlab pro to do the de-muxing.
    The buzz still exists.

However, if I record the MPEG file on a DVD (Data) disk (same RW+ media as before) the sound is OK.

The only difference I can see since this problem appeared is that I started shooting in "wide screen" mode and then encoding in 16:9 (with tmpgenc).

Before that I used the same software and same player and had no problems.
Is that info helpful to solve the mystery?
    thanks !

After you demux, how many elementary audio streams are produced: 2 or 3? And is there a buzz when you play any of those? If so, could you post an excerpt for us to analyze?

  8. when you changed your minidv cam from 4:3 to 16/9 did you perhaps change the bitrate of the audio also? they can record in 12 or 16 bit mode.
