I have been using ConvertXtoDVD to convert avi files to vob files. Suddenly whenever I attempt this my system reboots about a third way through the conversion process. What might be causing this?

    Windows XP Pro SP2
    3.2 GHz Pentium 4

  2. heat or failing memory possibly. open it up and clean out the cpu heatsink/fan unit. maybe install coretemp and watch the cpu temp during encoding. memory can be tested with a self booting floppy or cd, like the ms memory diagnostic you can download from microsoft. or there are others.

The 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 (aka Prescott) processor is a notorious heat generator especially during something as processor intensive as encoding. As minidv2dvd said, look into doing what you need to do to cool it down.

My system gave me the Blue Screeen of Death ... BSOD ... quite often and did not know why for long time.

I did find out ........ my power lead connections ... provided power to the two Harddrives ... C Drive and the D Drive and then the same wires trailed off to the ATI AIW X800XT video card ... way too much current. I disconnected the wires feeding my floppy drive and used those for my video card ... no more BSOD.

I read the info displayed in the blue screen ... one of the files mentioned ... was related to the files installed for the ATI video card.

After Months later .... which happened this past Summer of 2008 ... Power Supply died. I replaced it with a 500 watt Thermatake power supply ... no problems with that power supply.

The PS that died ... was a Allied ... they look good look and look reliable ... but I now have a few of them lying on the floor in my garage ... not working ... I am taking them apart and using the fans in them and the fan grills for other projects.

Thank you for the responses. It appears that excess heat was the problem. Monitoring the CPU temperature during the video encoding I discovered that the system rebooted when it reached about 70 °C. After giving the computer a thorough cleaning the temperature does not go above 55 °C and there are no problems.
