  1. This is rather surreal. Somehow I converged on the exact same workflow outlined in this link, but only after hitting my head against the wall too many times to count. It is satisfying to know "I am doing it right." The only thing I would add that isn't mentioned is that the lossless intermediate method is faster under 2-pass encoding when the frameserve fps is slower than ffmpeg's fps of a lossless intermediate (i.e. bypass frameserving twice at the slower fps).

    Indeed, if the filtering on its own takes the most time, especially compared to the encoding, then it may be faster to save the result of the filtering in an intermediate file and run the 2-pass encoding on this source instead of the slowly filtered frameserver script.

    I believe MeGUI supports this method as well...
