HI all..
I have a friend who is burrowing my VCD's. they are unplayable on his DVP-6360 which is suppose to be VCD complaint. I am using the HP CDrs.
I will try to burn a few VCD's for him on SONY cd'rs , but can anyone else think what else it could be?
all of these VCD's play fine on my Apex and Sampo.
But those expensive Sonys look to have problems.
thanks

Sony's won't play any cd-r's. They won't play sony cd-r's either. They will play any cd-rw, but who wants to pay a buck a cd. The only cd-r's I have gotten to play have been STI cd-r's. They are the cheap ones at circuit city. It has to do with the high reflectivity those cd-r's have. I just picked up a 200 pack for $10 after rebate. They also sell 25 packs for $3. Its the cheapest, and the only cd-r's that work with sony's.

thanks man..thought I was losing it for a minute. I was afraid that my encoding through TMPGEnc had to be changed or something. You would expect a name like SONY to have more flexibility than lets say Apex or Sampo DVD players but I guess not.
My friend just burrowed my Sampo cause he wanted to watch flics..go figure right? the cheapies are sometimes better.

Yeah, it sucks. I'm guessing sony does it because they have a big stake in the entertainment industry. They think it stops piracy. They want to prevent audio cd's, etc. from being played in them. I'm not sure. Anyway, those discs will work if your buddy gets them.

I see now and again people say they can get particular brands of cdr to play on Sony players - Princo being one frequently mentioned.
The question is - How reliable a read do you get from these cdrs? Is it 100%? How long does it take your Sony to recognise the cdr? I had semi success with a brand called JNL - my player would grunt and groan for 20-30 secs before it would recognise (or not recognise) these cdrs and sometimes even if they played the playback wasn't reliable.
I only have success with cdrw ( HP & Mr Platinum - I have tried both successfully). They both take up to 12 secs to be recognised by the Sony player and I noticed a Commercially produced VCD, I have, takes about 6 secs or less and maybe even DVDs take the same.
Is all the grunting and groaning doing damage to anything in the player?

No, its not doing any damage to your player. The only cd-r's I have got to play on my sony are the cd-r's I mentioned earlier. The player recognizes it after about 10 seconds(maybe a little less). I had a menu and everything on the vcd's I put in too. All the cd-rw brands I have tried have worked. Different players play different brands though. I did send my buddy a set of seinfelds on vcd(on the STI cd-r's) and it played fine on his sony. He could never find another cd-r to play on it. As for the read I have tried about 1000 vcd's and it hasn't messed up on any, so I would say that its pretty good.

Just heard from another friend that burrowed my movies..The HP Cd'rs dont read in his either. he has an RCA 5 disc DVD player that's VCD compliant..the one that you buy in Radio Shack.
so I'm slowly learning..now I have to buy a bunch of various media...couple different CDRW blanks and then maybe walk into a store and try the burns on various players to avoid this frustration.
