Blu-ray 9

I've converted a couple Blu-ray movies to regular DVD 9 D\L+R and they play well on my Sony S350. Why doesn't Sony make DVD9 releases of Blu-ray content,it would certainly lower the cost of Blu-ray disks at retail.
From what I've read some players might not handle it but requiring it for all future players is certainly possible.

Simple - they made bluray to sell bluray.

It might be technically possible but they want to sell the premium priced bluray discs.

I have done this as well....but quality is POOR if you do full disc backups, at least on my 50" Samsung plasma 1080p. Movie only works ok for dvd9

Profit is certainly their motive,but studio's are making money on their SD DVD's. This would provide a path to near Blu-ray quality at SD prices,movie only with second disk for extras if needed.

Space and by far the biggest issue is no DRM on DVD-9 discs. You can forget the studios will allow this

Then what's in it for the studios? All they would be doing is cannibalizing their DVD sales at the expense of their BD sales.

The only time bd will drop in price is when bd is only competiting with bd.

That's what happened when dvd finally overtook vhs. DVD was really pricey when it first came out. Once vhs went bellyup dvd prices dropped like a rock.

I'm sure the same scenario WOULD play out with bluray. HOWEVER given that bluray isn't likely to overtake dvd anytime soon I think we'll be stuck with higher bluray prices for awhile. Not to mention all of the portable devices that are dvd format and not bluray. The saturation of bluray players will need to be very very high before bluray movies can drop in price like the dvds did once they took over vhs.
