    Unlike previous version AVG 8 dosen't seem to do updates to the virus database. Is it now doing them in the background?

    Yes, it's doing them in the background now. You can manually try to update if you wish to be sure you're up to date.

    If you have the "Display tray notifications about update" checked in the Advanced Settings, you'll get a brief popop display when updates are completed.
