i'm looking for the answer to this: is it wise to make from my homevideo's minidvd's? I mean i can play them on my computer en later i plan to buy a mdvd compatible standalone dvdplayer, but in future: is it wise? is it the troubles and time worth? can in the future i still edit for example the minidvd? or convert it back to edit it? what do u specialists think about the minidvd format? will it be just as mpeg2 become a standard? with other words isn't it better to make svcd's for better future compatibility? because i delete de minitapes after the editing en making of a minidvd, it would be a shame if i lose the original source if i cannot edit the endresult... thanks for your insights, thomas

In terms of quality - it all depends how good your homevideos are. If you would capture these movies at the DVD bitrate (up to 9800kb/s) you would have the best possible quality.

Again all depends on your input file. Then I would say its definitely worth the time and effort. If the quality isn't that good you might consider XSVCD or SVCD.

Yes, it would be like ripping a standard DVD with VOB files.

Not a specialist, but as DVD's are becoming around the world the new standard for watching movies etc. I would say it's definitely around to stay for a while 10-15 years minimum. SVCD's are seen as a middle thing betweeen VCD's and DVD's - so why would they go back to them? It would be like Sony re-introducing Betamax!

Of course if you want to play safe I would make copies of your finished product. One for viewing and editing - one just in case!
Hope this helped you!

Yes, thanks for your insights.
Actually, i donnot know exact what and how I'm capturing yet (firewire in videostudio5, exporting dvd plugin) so i guess it's avi 2 format that i'm capturing, also editing and finally ouput in mpeg2.
for a newby lot's of things to discover
also noticed on the dvdplayer list here, that a few standalone players can acutally play minidvd format cdr/cdrw's. do u think in the future more and more standalone dvdplayers can play this format?

Very often no name or lets call them non-branded standalone DVD Players will play the so-called mini-DVD format. I think this was never itentional but more an accident. The inside of these players, more the drive system is very similar (if not identical) to what you have in your PC. I doubt if the regular branded standalone DVD Players will change much in future. -

Actually not so often.
Most "no-name" players will in fact NOT let you play miniDVDs.

I disagree slightly, but perhaps I should have written - if a DVD Player plays mini-DVD's it's most likely to be a non-branded one - hence the list here:
http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=&minidvd=1&Submit2=Search&Search=Search&list=0

aldus4, the vcdhelp list is FILLED with errors, mostly because a lot of people don't know what miniDVDs are. For a time, even the Apex was listed as playing back miniDVDs.
There are only a few (?2 or 3) unique players that play back miniDVDs. These players have been re-badged with different names in different parts of the world.
The portable AIWAs can also play back miniDVDs. There are no re-badged versions of these players though.
However, if you go into your average electronics store and try out all the "no-name" brands of DVD players, you'll find that it'll be a rare occurance to find one where miniDVDs play.
