I am aware of a problem with 16:9 DVD menus, in that if a user's DVD player is set to 4:3PS instead of WIDE [or LETTERBOX], then the menu highlights will appear out-of-sync with the buttons [i.e. the 'highlighted' menu text will appear in a different place on the screen instead of 'over' the menu text].

I have completed a project in Avid Liquid 7.2 and am ready to author the DVD, but it seems that Liquid's built in DVD authoring cannot overcome this problem.

Having researched retail DVDs, I notice that some of these manage to disable the 'TV DISPLAY' option on the user's DVD player. Often the 'MENU' button on the DVD player remote is disabled during the DVD MENU screen, and sometimes the TV DISPLAY option within that menu is greyed out and unchangeable by the user during film playback. Or, if the TV DISPLAY is allowed to be changed to the incorrect aspect ratio of 4:3PS during the film itself, then pressing the MENU on DVD remote forces this value back to the desired 'wide' so the 16:9 menu displays and works correctly.

Many DVD players seem to default at 4:3PS and need the user to make the change to 'WIDE' to ensure correct aspect ratio harmony between DVD player and TV. This often seems to be the case for 'homemade' DVDs, at least.

What application can I use to encode this kind of control over the user's DVD player during playback of my discs? I want to set the TV SETTING to WIDE as standard, and disallow any attempted manual changes by the user via their remote control. My goal is to eliminate the possibility of any out-of-sync menu buttons/highlights due to incorrect user settings.

Thank you for any help here.
