Is it better to use the AC3 5.1 or 2.0 source track for an XviD using VBR MP3 audio? I can't really find a definitive answer. Was going to backup a few of my own DVDs and want to get the best quality possible without encoding to AC3 audio.

  4. If your DVD has both DD 5.1 and DD 2.0 tracks, and you want to use one to convert to stereo MP3, then use the DD 2.0 track. But if you're talking about backing up your DVDs to DVD, then MP3 is no good. If you're backing them up to AVI or somesuch, then MP3 is fine.

If you are backing up DVD to DVD than mp3 is not supported for that format.
If you are doing DVD to Xvid(DivX) than mp3 is fine, but that format support ac3 also. File will be much larger specially if you use 5.1.
To convert ac3 to mp3 you will end up with stereo one way or the other, so it make no difference what ac3 audio you will chose for conversion.
